Westward Ho 2015

Time to move south. After one overnight at Butte Montana KOA, we arrived at West Grizzly RV Park at the entrance to Yellowstone NP. Montana. CG was full and believe we got the last spots. Suppose to have thunderstorms and instead had sunshine, a rainbow and then snow storms. We ended our first day with awesome new experiences followed by dinner at the Slippery Otter. Next day we had one small light shower, cool but sunny and left the park at the end of the day in a snowstorm.

Westward Ho 2015

Then on I-90 to Glacier NP. It’s only Sept 9th so we are doing good. Quick stop at Sturgis SD to say we had been there even tho ghost town at this time of year. With one overnight stay at Mountain Range CG Columbus MT, we arrive at North American RV Park on the west border of the park.  Not fancy but worked for us. We drove north to the park along the west side of Flathead Lake but in hind site the east side is easier and shorter. Good highways.
The weather at Glacier was in the 80s and sunny. The ‘Road to the Sun’ highway (which we drove several times) was narrow and winding up the mountains but the only snow we saw was at Logan’s Pass along the way. Our Senior Passes got us into the park for free and we went daily. So much beauty and we did see a Grizzly Bear and a Black Bear. John, Greg and Kathie hiked the Hidden Lake Nature Trail from Logan’s Pass where they saw Hoary Marmots and a Colubian Ground Squirrel. They said the views were amazing.

Westward Ho 2015

Well next item on our bucket list is Glacier NP. Goal is to get there early and enjoy warm sunshine and avoid snow. John and I left Willow Lake CG in Woodstock, Ontario on August 28th and headed west. At some point Kathie & Greg and Chuck & Ruby will meet up with us to take their first RV road trip.
First stop for John and I is Hickory Hollow CG, Utica, Illinois. Nice area and nice cg. Chuck and Ruby were delayed re motorhome problems so after a few days, John and I head for the Heartland RV Resort, Hermosa, SD. John and I have stayed there before and we are fine with it. We passed Wall Drugs in the Badlands of SD where we had once stopped on a previous trip Believe a tourist trap  but a ‘been there done it’ thing. After an overnight stop at the KOA, Sioux City North, SD., we arrive at Heartland Sept 2nd to meet up with Kathie and Greg who are already set up. Chuck and Ruby arrive the next day and the touring begins. After our exciting train ride in Keystone SD, we stopped at Ruby’s Tavern to drink and settle down from the wild ride thru the back woods. Then buffalo medallions, elk and venison at the Powder House Lodge and Restaurant in Keystone. Picnic lunch at a roadside stop while we toured Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park. We were happy we had been advised to tour the Ellisworth Air Force Base near Rapid City. It was interesting to go down in the 80 ft deep silo to see the nuclear warhead missile, one of 1250 in the U.S. during the Cold War. This Minuteman Missile in the silo made of reinforced concrete with a steel plate liner could be launched in seconds. Great tour of the base and to learn of it’s contributions to the defense of our nation. Great stop enjoying the company of good friends while exploring this area of the U.S. in our RVs.

Christmas 2013

This year we flew to Detroit, Mi., rented a car and drove across the border to Canada for Christmas. Chiko's first time flying and he did great. No big deal, crate went under seat in front of us and he slept. So easy. Ontario was a winter wonderland with the snow. We did have freezing rain but car worked out well and weather held off allowing us to travel to Owen Sound to see mom. Bob and Dione gave us 6 tickets to a live performance of Elf. We took their four kids and loved it.
